Kim Joung-Nam
Abstract
This is a qualitative case study that explores the psychological difficulties experienced by mothers of a child with pediatric cancer using the concept of psychological inflexibility. In this study, mothers of a child with pediatric cancer are viewed as beings capable of taking an active attitude toward hardships rather than as beings psychologically ill and problematic. For this study, in-depth interviews were conducted on five participants and Stakes¡¯case study data analysis and interpretation methods were used. As a result, five overarching themes were derived on the psychological difficulties of mothers of a child with pediatric cancer. Those are as follows: anxiety about the progression of the disease, anxiety about the future of their child. burdens of child care and household affairs, shrinking from meeting people, negative thoughts and feelings about themselves. Those themes were reconceptualized into six mechanisms of psychological inflexibility according to the ACT model: cognitive fusion, experiential avoidance, dominance of conceptualized past and future, lack of values clarity, inaction, bonding to the conceptualized self. This study viewed mothers of a child with pediatric cancer from the perspective of psychological inflexibility and suggested intervention strategies that can be effective for those mothers.
